This chapter is about the diversity that characterizes marriage migration in East Asia among both the bride and groom as well as the various diversities that (mainly female) marriage migrants bring to their husbands’ host communities. Marriage migrants must prove the “authenticity” of their marriage to the receiving country’s government, are expected to be permanent, and are subject to the social expectations and pressures of the husband’s family. In contrast to standard stereotypes of them as young women escaping economic desperation in less developed Asian countries who marry much older, wealthier men in richer East Asian countries, there is considerable diversity in age, socioeconomic and educational status, rural/urban origins, and the motivations of both bride and groom, as well as their marital outcomes. In addition, marriage migrants also bring ethnic diversity to the host country by helping internationalize local receiving communities, making them more multicultural, and sustaining and revitalizing those in demographic decline. Nonetheless, there are limits to the ability of migrant wives to ethnically diversify host societies since they are often isolated from their immigrant compatriots and are subject to considerable assimilative pressures to integrate into the husband’s family by learning the language and culture of the receiving country.
