Digital Commons@Georgia Southern is an open access digital collection whose purpose is to collect and disseminate the intellectual and creative output of the University’s faculty, staff and students. Contributions come from all over campus and include theses/dissertations, conference proceedings, research publications, brochures, and newsletters.Besides housing our University’s scholarship and creative works, Digital Commons also has the capacity to publish online journals and manage conferences. The site also hosts SelectedWorks web pages for our faculty, which are profiles that highlight faculty publications and achievements. Qualitative data reinforce the notion that active learning is associated with conceptual change and suggests that more research is needed to examine the differential effects of varying active-learning strategies on students’ attitudes and motivation in the domain. In response to calls for reform in undergraduate biology education, we conducted research examining how varying active-learning strategies impacted students’ conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivation in two sections of a large-lecture introductory cell and molecular biology course. Using a quasi-experimental design, we collected quantitative data to compare participants’ conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivation in the biological sciences across two contexts that employed different active-learning strategies and that were facilitated by unique instructors. Students participated in either graphic organizer/worksheet activities or clicker-based case studies. After controlling for demographic and presemester affective differences, we found that students in both active-learning environments displayed similar and significant learning gains. In terms of attitudinal and motivational data, significant differences were observed for two attitudinal measures. The GCMN model may be a scalable model in similar low-resource settings and the importance of integrating nutrition and high-quality early childhood education interventions in cognitive and growth outcomes is highlighted in this study. : Background: About 47% of children < 5 years of age are stunted in Guatemala. In this study, the investigators aimed to compare growth and cognitive outcomes between children in second grade that attended five Guatemala City Municipal Nurseries (GCMN) vs. same sex, grade, and age-matched children. Methods: A cross-sectional design nested in a retrospective cohort was implemented between 2015 and 2019. Children that attended the GCMN and matched controls completed a math test and validated receptive language and fluid intelligence tests. The primary caregivers completed a sociodemographic survey. General and generalized linear mixed effect models were used to compare children that attended the GCMN vs. controls. The models were adjusted by maternal education, sex, asset score, and other relevant covariates. Results: Children that attended the GCMN exhibited greater math and fluid intelligence scores relative to the controls in the adjusted models (ß = 6.48; 95% CI (2.35–10.61)) and (ß = 1.20; 95% CI (0.12–2.29)), respectively. Topographic scale characteristics contain valuable information for interpreting landform structures, which is crucial for understanding the spatial differentiation of landforms across large areas. However, the absence of parameters that specifically describe the topographic scale characteristics hinders the quantitative representation of regional topography from the perspective of spatial scales. In this study, false-color composite images were generated using normalized topographic relief data, showing a type of scale-oriented terrain pattern. Subsequent analysis indicated a direct correlation between the luminance of the patterns and the normalized topographic relief. Additionally, a linear correlation exists between the color of the patterns and the change rate in normalized topographic relief. Based on the analysis results, the issue of characterizing topographic scale effects was transformed into a problem of interpreting terrain patterns. The introduction of two parameters, flux and curl of topographic field, allowed for the interpretation of the terrain patterns. The assessment indicated that the calculated values of topographic field flux are equivalent to the luminance of the terrain patterns and the variations in the topographic field curl correspond with the spatial differentiation of colors in the terrain patterns.
