TZIA GUIDE - TRAVEL INFORMATION KEA GUIDE

Kea or otherwise known as Tzia is located 21 km east of the southern tip of Attiki / Attica and has 131.7 km² surface area. There are daily boats from Lavrio, and the travel time is about one hour. There are also boat connections to Syros and Kithnos, which the during the summer months become more frequent. The main areas on the island are connected with paved roads but most of the the other roads are on rocky trails so some sort of 4x4 is recommended, especially to reach most of the good Beaches. There are a few taxis available as well as car rental services.

Corissia Port

The port of the island of Kea is Korissia. Located in the bay of St. Nikolaos, a small town with a long beach, a couple well stocked supermarkets, several restaurants, cafes, bars. Behind the main street you will find small stores for those interested in island shopping!

Vourkari

The small village in the bay of Aghios Nikolaos also the Yacht harbor of Kea which has several restaurants and cafes, bars. At night you will find a few places that will be open till late for drinks as it is the nightlife and party area of the island.

Otzia

A small settlement by the beach with a few excellent restaurants to choose from. The waters are shallow and safe. Naturally protected from the wind by the hills, in spite of being affected by the Meltemi some times.

Ioulida

The main town of the island Ioulida like any other main town on a Greek island Called Chora. You can find many stores and restaurants including a few bars.

Many Paths for hiking also cross from here. Cars are not allowed in the town, so you will have to park and walk into the town.

Poisses

Located on the ancient settlement called Poisses a long beach and accessible by car. The only organised camping spot is also located behind the beach, you can also find a mini market on the main road going through the area.

Koundouros

Koundouros located on the far side of the island, has a number of beaches small and big. Some have restaurants, beach beds, cafes, water sports amenities while others are just tiny beaches with sand and a few big rocks and maybe a tree or two for shade.

Lion of Kea

The ancient Lion of Kea located near the island town Ioulida. Its estimates it was carved 600 BCE, According to legend the gods sent a lion to destroy the island which was home to water nymphs that are said to have made the gods jealous. The stone statue has been eroded by weather but still remains a landmark on the island. For directions to the closest parking near the lion check our map on top of this page.

Gialiskari Beach

Located between the Port and Vourkari, its one of the most famous beaches of the island. Its a clean beach with an organised beach bar but doesn't play music too loud. For those not interested in the paid umbrella and sunbeds their is shade as the trees give plenty of shelter

Ancient Karthea

Ancient Karthea was founded in the 12th century BC in the archaic times and its lifespan reached till the early Byzantine period. The route there is popular for trekking on the island, as this site is located about 23 km from Ioulida, the capital of Kea. It is located in a region that is pretty hard to access, on the south-eastern side of the island, other than hiking to the ruins you can also find donkey rides for those that don't want to walk

Camping in KEA

For those that enjoy nature Camping Kea is located on the southeast side of the Island in the area of ​​Poisses, 17 km from the port. It is 100 meters from the beach in a place ideal for calm and relaxing summer holidays.

Panagia Kastriani

Located on the northern side of the island, only 12 km from Kea’s capital Ioulis. According to the local tradition, back in 1700 AD some shepherds saw a light coming from the top of Kastri hill. They started climbing to the hill to follow this light. After some digging they found an icon of Virgin Mary. This is the reason that they later built this small church dedicated to Virgin Mary.
