My experience with Portage Public School is one of divide. Although Portage Northern and Portage Central are part of the same district, the unfortunate divide between the two schools makes it hard to believe. The two schools have a vastly different atmosphere and community. They are also made up of very different groups of people. Portage Northern is a much more diverse school and often considered as the "have nots" by the other side of the town. But as a Northern student I can tell you this is the exact opposite of the truth. Although the administration building for PPS sits right outside of Portage Central the heart of the community is driven by Northern. At Northern it is the best example of community and home. Student and teacher interactions flood the halls and students fell a special place at school. I never really liked school until I experienced Northern. The Northern community has changed my life, and looking back on it I am glad to say I went to Northern and not Central.

I have loved my past years at Portage Schools, specifically Portage Central High School. I have made many pleasant memories. I have had great experiences with most of my teachers, but for the most part, they all have been so helpful, whether it was in teaching me a subject or helping me with personal issues. I'd say the only really bad parts have been how expensive some things have been for me, and how difficult the school workload has been. I have been taking honors and IB classes since the sixth grade, and obviously, there was going to be more work as time went on and I got older, but the amount of tests and busy work I have been given all in a week had become more of a nuisance and made learning less interesting. As for expenses, having to pay for lunch, off-campus passes, parking passes, getting into sports, and even paying for the school spirit wear has been a lot until I got a job. I get why the school does it, but for high school students, this stuff tends to add up.

Portage Central High School has a great environment for students who want to learn and grow. We have great sports programs and opportunities for growth within academics and extracurriculars. I love that my school offers the IB Diploma but I think we lack resources or help for students to navigate the stress and hard work that comes with it. I think that we could also improve on getting students ready for college, we could benefit from college/career fairs because I think many students don't even know where to start when it comes to applying for colleges and planning their future.
