Poughkeepsie: Poughkeepsie is de grootste stad aan de Hudson's oostelijke oever, beroemd om Vassar, een privéschool voor vrije kunsten die tot 1969 alleen vrouwen erkende. Het hoogtepunt van Poughkeepsie is the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, de stad Poughkeepsie is niet zo indrukwekkend. Poughkeepsie wordt voornamelijk als uitvalsbasis gebruikt om andere bezienswaardigheden te bezoeken zoals het huis van Franklin D. Roosevelt en de Vanderbilt Mansion.2)
The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park: Een aanrader en absoluut een wandeling waard is een wandeling over de Walkway Over the Hudson met zijn adembenemende uitzichten. Dit was voorheen de Highland-Poughkeepsie spoorwegbrug en is sinds 2009 's werelds langste voetgangersbrug en tevens het nieuwste park van de staat. Hier kun je heerlijk wandelen en van de prachtige Hudson Valley genieten. De Walkway is trouwens gratis en voor iedereen toegankelijk.Bezienswaardigheden buiten Poughkeepsie:1)
Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site: Hyde Park ligt slechts 8,5 km (11 minuten) vanaf Poughkeepsie. Dit stadje is bekend geworden als de plaats waar Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), de tweeëndertigste president van de Verenigde Staten, is geboren en begraven (evenals zijn vrouw Eleanor). De Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site is dagelijks geopend. Het Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, dat beschikt over een uitgebreide verzameling historisch materiaal over de periode 1910-1945, is eveneens een bezoekje waard. De woning waar Eleanor Roosevelt na de dood van haar man heeft gewoond, Val-Kill, is tijdens de zomermaanden ook geopend. De voorouders van de familie Roosevelt zijn afkomstig uit Nederland: stamvader Claes Maartenzoon van Roseveldt vertrok in 1640 vanuit Tholen naar de Nieuw Wereld.2)
Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site: In Hyde Park vindt je ook Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site (bij US Highway 9). Het renaissancistische paleis, ontworpen voor spoorwegmagnaat Frederick W. Vanderbilt, werd voltooid in 1899. Het biedt een spectaculair uitzicht over de rivier en bevat veel meubilair, kunst, wandkleden en architectonische details die zijn ontleend aan een paleis in Parijs dat Napoleon ooit bewoonde. Het Vanderbilt Mansion is dagelijks open voor bezichtiging.

Roosevelt and the Vanderbilt Mansion.2) The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park: Worth a stroll for its breathtaking views is the Walkway Over the Hudson formerly the Highland-Poughkeepsie railroad bridge and since 2009 the worlds's longest pedestrian bridge and the state's newest park. Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site: Hyde Park lies only 5,4 miles (11 minutes) from Poughkeepsie. This town is known as the place where Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), the thirty-second president of the United States, was born and buried (as well as his wife Eleanor). The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site is open daily. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, which has an extensive collection of historical material from 1910-1945, is also worth a visit. The home where Eleanor Roosevelt lived after the death of her husband, Val-Kill, is also open during the summer months. The ancestors of the Roosevelt family are from the Netherlands: in 1640, founder Claes Maartenzoon van Roseveldt departed from Tholen to the New World.
2) Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site: In Hyde Park you will also find the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site (at US Highway 9). The renaissance palace, designed for railroad magnate Frederick W. Vanderbilt, was completed in 1899. It offers a spectacular view of the river and includes many furniture, art, tapestries and architectural details derived from a palace in Paris that Napoleon once unhabited. The Vanderbilt Mansion is open daily for viewing.
