Roosevelt (1882-1945), the thirty-second president of the United States, was born and buried (as well as his wife Eleanor). The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site is open daily. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, which has an extensive collection of historical material from 1910-1945, is also worth a visit. The home where Eleanor Roosevelt lived after the death of her husband, Val-Kill, is also open during the summer months. The ancestors of the Roosevelt family are from the Netherlands: in 1640, founder Claes Maartenzoon van Roseveldt departed from Tholen to the New World.

2) Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site: In Hyde Park you will also find the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site (at US Highway 9). The renaissance palace, designed for railroad magnate Frederick W. Vanderbilt, was completed in 1899. It offers a spectacular view of the river and includes many furniture, art, tapestries and architectural details derived from a palace in Paris that Napoleon once unhabited. The Vanderbilt Mansion is open daily for viewing.
