The 5 Hour Course is currently being offered through live distance learning (Zoom class) until further notice.
This course is live, interactive, and engaging! You will be able to interact and ask questions with a live instructor. You will not be clicking your screen for 5 Hours!
No final exam or quizzes required at any point in the course! If you attend this course, you will be issued a completion certificate!

Who Must Take it
- All new drivers in New York State must complete a 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course.
- The course is also required for drivers with expired or revoked licenses.
- New residents with licenses from other countries must also complete the course.
- It is not the same as a driver education course (MV-285).
Course Highlights
- The 5 hour driving course covers essential topics such as defensive driving techniques, traffic laws, and safe driving practices.
- Students who complete the 5 hour driving class will receive a 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate (MV-278), which will allow you to schedule and take your road test in NY.
- The five hour class is offered online through a Zoom class and will be completed in a single session.

Receiving Certificates
You will have two choices for how you can receive your certificate:
- You may choose to have your certificate mailed out anywhere within the US for a $5 fee (1-2 week wait time)
- Alternatively, you are able to pickup your certificate from 594 Dean Street, Office 1, Brooklyn, NY 11238 during office hours. Please check Google for our most up-to-date Office Hours.

Duplicate Certificates
Have you misplaced or lost your original 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course Certificate?
You can request a duplicate copy, by simply filling out our form. We will process your request and mail your duplicate certificate to the address you provide. Please note that the original certificate must not be expired.

What documents do I need?
A Plastic Photo NY Learners Permit Card
If you have not received your plastic photo learners permit card in the mail (takes about 2 weeks), you can use the paper learners permit with New York State Identification issued from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. New York State Identification can be a state ID card, expired drivers license, or an expired learners permit.
Disclaimer: You are not permitted to take the course with only the Interim Permit. US Passports or Greencards are not accepted documents by the NYS DMV.

When will the zoom link be sent?
You will receive the Zoom Link in the booking confirmation immediately following booking to course.
What Documentation do I need?
Once you sign up for the course, you will shortly receive an email containing a form. In this form you must upload an image of your Photo Learner Permit so that we may process your 5 Hour Course Certificate once you complete the course.
Is the 5 Hour Pre-licensing course mandatory?
The 5 Hour-PreLicensing Course is a mandatory pre-requisite if you want to obtain a New York Driver's License.
how long will my 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course Certificate be valid?
The Pre-Licensing Course Certificate expires one year from the date you took the course.
I lost my certificate. What do I do?
If you lost your certificate, we are able to issue you a duplicate copy. Simply fill out this form and we will have the duplicate mailed out to you. Click Here For The Form
How do I cancel or reschedule a 5 Hour course that I have scheduled?

Do I have to take the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course before I start my driving lessons?
The 5 Hour Course is not required to be taken before you participate in driving lessons. However, it is highly recommneded as the 5 Hour Course offers invaluable information that will help keep you safe and aware on the road, and may help improve your driving skills.
What is the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course?
The 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course is a mandatory course for anyone looking to obtain a NY Driver's License. This course provides new drivers with information to help them drive safely.
Who is required to take the course?

You can register for the course online, by phone, or in person at a Drive Rite Academy location. You will need to provide your personal information and pay the course fee with a credit card or Debit card.

You will receive a Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) after completing the course. Upon registering for the course, you will be emailed a form, where you can choose whether you would like us to mail it to you, or if you would like to pick it up in person.
Do I need to take a road test after completing the course?
Yes, you will still need to pass the road test in order to obtain a driver's license in New York State. However, you must complete the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course before you can take the road test.
